UC-II® - Undenatured Type II collagen (Type II = joint health Type I & III = skin health)

Type II Collagen is the primary structural component in cartilage. Unlike other collagen or joints products, UC-II collagen deactivates collagen-specific T-cells (cells that attack collagen), allowing the body to reduce inflammation and rebuild and repair articular cartilage. Only a small daily dose is needed. Small amounts have been shown to be the most effective.

Undenatured Type II collagen means that it is not processed by heat (uses a low temp) or chemicals (stays in its native state). This ensures the biological activity remains active. If it is heated, then it loses its immune modulating ability and its ability to rebuild and repair the joints.

Mechanism of Action:

1. Initiation: Ageing, stress, injury leads to wear and tear of joint cartilage resulting in initiation of inflammatory responses (pro-inflammatory cytokines).

2. T-cell activation: Once inflammation reaches a threshold – the body’s defense system responds by releasing collagen specific T-cells which activate the production collagen specific antibodies from B-cells which in turn migrate and bind to collagen.

3. De-activation: – UC-II works by deactivating collagen specific T-cells, halting and even reversing the progression of Osteoarthritis allowing joints the opportunity to heal and regenerate.

UC-II contains special molecules called Epitopes. These are immune system markers that interact with certain antibodies to trigger the de-activation of collagen-specific T-cells and in turn help deactivate the inflammatory process.

Vitamin D3 is required for the optimal function and production of cartilage as well as helping to promote strong healthy bones. Boron is essential for healthy bones and is shown to be deficient in people with Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid arthritis. Joints receive nutrients through adjoining bones – so healthy bones are key for healthy joints.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by an inflammatory synovial response that leads to joint wear and tear and can be attributed to age, weight, acidity, injury, biomechanics etc. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system turns against itself and killer T-cells begin to attack the joint cartilage resulting in inflammation and joint destruction. Many of the biochemical markers associated with OA inflammation are also associated with RA inflammation. UC-II suppresses the T-cell mediated inflammation in both forms of arthritis.
